A public hearing was held on the topic "Improving legislation on women's and children's rights: current situation and new challenges"

On October 27, 2023, according to the request of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, the Human Rights and Family, Women and Children's Committee of the Milli Majlis held a public hearing on "Improving legislation on women's and children's rights: current situation and new challenges".

Mrs. Bahar Muradova, the Chair of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, noted that the UN committees on children's rights and on the elimination of discrimination against women gave recommendations based on the periodical reports of Azerbaijan. She noted that the country's parliament always keeps these issues in mind, and spoke about the importance of improving the legislation on the subject under discussion, taking into account modern challenges in this field. The Chair of the Committee noted that the representative function of the parliament is performed at a high level, and spoke about the role of the parliament in ensuring the efficiency of the mechanisms of implementation of the adopted laws.

Mrs. Bahar Muradova said that the women's policy founded by Great Leader Heydar Aliyev has been successfully continued today. She noted that our state pays special attention to the protection of women's and children's rights, and the current situation in our country in this field is at a high level, unlike a number of other countries. She stressed that despite the implemented measures, there are certain problems in our country. She expressed her views on the improvement of the legislation related to the solution of these problems and the role of the society in their elimination.

The Chair of the Committee said that the recommendations of the relevant UN committees regarding the assessment of the situation in our country and the ways out are basically the same as our position, but there are some exceptions. She spoke about the importance of taking into account the state and national interests of each country in following these recommendations.

B. Muradova said that these recommendations cover a number of directions, and spoke about the importance of issues related to the strengthening of punishments, wages, the place and role of women in the labor market, and the results achieved, drawing attention to recommendations for improving the legislation in the direction of ensuring women's equal rights in these and other areas. The Chair of the Committee also said that issues related to the protection of women's and children's rights are reflected in a number of state programs, and she pointed out the priority directions in this field.

At the event, Mrs. Jeyran Rahmatullayeva, the Chief of Staff of the State Committee, and Mrs. Taliya Ibrahimova, Head of the Legal Assurance Department, made a speech and reported on the recommendations of the UN Committees on Children's Rights and the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women.

Discussion was held and suggestions were made based on the presented information.
