On October 7, 1901, as a result of the initiative and several years of efforts of the great philanthropist Zeynalabdin Tagiyev, the first secular girls' school in the Muslim East was opened in Baku.
«it is important for our girls to study in modern times," said HZ Tagiyev, who opened a girls' school at the cost of a thousand sufferings, which caused a revolution in the history of 20th century Muslim Eastern education.
Although Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev, who wanted to open a girls' school in Baku, first asked permission from Emperor Alexander III, the answer was no. When Tsar Nicholay II ascended the throne, Haji tried again: in 1895, at Nicholas's coronation, Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev, representing the Muslims of the Caucasus, asked for the opening of a girls' school named after the tsar's wife, Alexandra Fyodorovna. HZ Tagiyev, who received verbal and official consent in 1896, first of all focused on the selection and construction of an appropriate place for the school building. Despite Tagiyev's efforts, the resolution of the issue was artificially delayed by the procrastination of the Russian imperial authorities. As a result, it took 4 years to locate and build the school building. Finally, a Muslim girls' school was built next to the Ismailiyya building in Baku, which later housed the parliament of the Azerbaijan People's Republic, where the Institute of Manuscripts of the National Academy of Sciences operates.
Known as "Tagiyev's school", this educational institution was the first spark of revival in the field of education and upbringing of our society. The graduates of this school later played a great role in the life of the Azerbaijani people and contributed to its enlightenment. Graduates Rahila Hajibababayova, Shahrabanu Shabanova, Shafiqa Efendizade, Sakina Akhundzade, Maryam Gembitskaya, Nazli Tahirova, who opened a girls' school in Nakhchivan, Liza Mukhtarova, founder of the Women's Charity Society in Baku, Zuleykha Valiyeva and dozens of other girls later took part in the event. A few years later, the number of girls' schools in Baku increased. As a result, the Girls 'School began to function as a Teachers' Seminary. Graduates of the school also taught here. In the early years, families who opposed girls 'education and going to school were already taking a normal approach to it, and even the society was interested in girls' education.
"If a woman laughs, our hot environment will laugh, and the dragged humanity will rise with a woman!" said Hussein Javid. As a continuation of the enlightenment work founded by our 20th century thinkers and intellectuals, an army of educated patriots who spared no effort to see the name "Azerbaijan" among the leading countries and devoted their lives to the development of our nation grew up. it was given in Azerbaijan.
As a continuation of this enlightened path, today our boys and girls are educated on equal opportunities and contribute to the development of our state and society. Thanks to the attention and care of President Ilham Aliyev, as well as First Vice President, Head of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva, measures are regularly taken to open new schools that meet high standards and improve the educational conditions of children. Various projects and competitions are held for their development, their opportunities to study abroad and build a successful career are expanded. At a time when Azerbaijan has regained its integrity, projects are being prepared to open new educational institutions in our liberated lands.
The education of our girls is especially important in terms of ensuring gender equality in society, women's economic participation and the development of the country in all areas. As the great philanthropist Zeynalabdin Tagiyev said, by educating a boy we get an educated person, by educating a girl we get an educated family.
The Girls' School, a turning point in the history of education and enlightenment in our society, will be remembered for years to come and will be remembered as an invaluable example from generation to generation.
