The demonstrative burning of the Azerbaijani flag by an officially accredited person at the opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championship held in Armenia on April 15, 2023 and the applause of this action by the Armenians participating in the event is a clear example of the hostile attitude and spirit of hatred that exists in this country against Azerbaijan.
In addition to revealing Armenia's inability to host prestigious international sports competitions and ensure the safety of athletes, this event once again showed the world community its repeated violation of the requirements of international agreements and conventions, as well as its indifference to humanitarian and universal values.
Taking into account that the Azerbaijani national weightlifting team, which includes female athletes, will not compete in Armenia in a situation where security is not ensured and there is open hatred, it was decided that our athletes should return to their homeland.
Because the use of sport, a symbol of peace, unity and friendship, as a tool for racial discrimination, Armenia's failure to fulfill its obligations, and its irresponsible attitude directly violate the requirements of international law.
Impunity for such behavior can lead to more serious consequences and encourage such acts.
As the State Committee on Family, Women and Children Affairs, we call on the world community and international sports organizations not to be indifferent to Armenia's actions that are against all international norms and principles, to restrict the holding of world-class competitions in a country that promotes actions in the spirit of national hatred, and to take other appropriate steps.
