At present, suicide is a very complex global phenomenon, and it worries the whole world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 800,000 people around the world die each year as a result of suicide, with one person committing suicide every 40 seconds, the majority of whom are men.
What causes people to commit suicide?
Suicides occur in all countries of the world and in different age groups. The reasons include psychological, sociological, biological, family factors, genetic problems. Of course, no matter where a person lives, the problems he faces, especially the socio-psychological problems, are almost the same.
According to the research, the main cause of suicide is depression. But in addition to depression, mental and incurable diseases, alcohol and drug abuse, bipolar affective disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia also contribute to suicide.
Numerous scientific studies have confirmed that the widespread dissemination of facts about suicide in the media, leads to an increase of suicides in society. For this reason, in some countries it is not recommended to disseminate information, photos about suicide in the media. For example, there is such experience in Austria and England. Therefore, media coverage of suicide and violence should be more sensitive.
One important point should not be neglected. After each suicide, there is a wave of panic and accusation in society. Representatives of the media, public figures, as a rule, prefer to discuss the punishment of the offender, targeting a particular person, family member or official body, by "contributing" to the neglect of the real causes, the problems listed above.
To save a person who sees suicide as a way out of many problems, we must take steps based on preventive measures, sensitivity, especially to family members, relatives and friends, and be careful in our social judgment.
Attention should be paid not only to the irreversible consequences, but also to the elimination of stereotypes that are sometimes presented to society in the guise of traditions that do not fit into any legal or moral framework.
After all, it will have to be a work that each of us, as individuals and as a society, will have to do together. Then life will inspire everyone to love it, rather than give it up.
