A round table dedicated to the increase of women's activity in elections

A round table dedicated to increasing the participation of women in elections was held on January 29, 2024, with the cooperation of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs and the Central Election Commission.

Mazahir Panahov, the Chairman of the Central Election Commission who opened the event organized in connection with the extraordinary presidential elections of the Republic of Azerbaijan scheduled for February 7, noted that it is gratifying that Azerbaijani women are always active in country-wide events, and emphasized the importance of demonstrating this activity in the election process. He pointed out that the representation of women in the election commissions exceeded 40 percent, especially at the level of the secretary and chairman of the commission, the indicators of women's participation are high.

Noting this year's election as a special page in the history of Azerbaijan, the chairman assessed the presidential elections held for the first time after the liberation of our lands from occupation as "Victory elections". Stating that elections in our country are always held within the framework of international standards and in a transparent manner, M. Panahov noted the appropriate conditions that have been created in Karabakh to ensure convenient participation of the population in voting, and in general, there are more than 6300 polling stations in the country.

Later, from the speech, Ms. Bahar Muradova, the Chair of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs noted that today Azerbaijan has entered a new stage of its development. She emphasized that we are the inheritors of a Republic that established the first democratic Republic in the East and gave women the right to vote and be elected before many countries in the world. She said that the dreams, national ideas, and goals set historically were achieved after Azerbaijan gained independence for the second time and Heydar Aliyev returned to power.

Drawing attention to the extraordinary presidential elections to be held in our country shortly after, B. Muradova noted that for the first time, elections are being held in all territories of Azerbaijan, which have restored their sovereign rights and are included in the borders of the victorious Azerbaijan: "We must try to exercise our right to vote within the framework defined by the laws. We need this for our future, to build a highly developed country, where every citizen lives in prosperity, and not even an inch of land will be occupied again" added the Chair of the Committee.

Highlighting the measures implemented by the Committee since the announcement of the extraordinary elections, the chairman emphasized the active participation of the "For Equal Development" Coalition, which was created by the representatives of women and non-governmental organizations a short time ago.

At the end of her speech, B. Muradova stated that today's event has its place among the contributions to the election process, and expressed her belief that Azerbaijani women will effectively use their voter rights and duties as citizens of every country.
Later, according to the agenda of the event, Ilkin Shahbazov, a member of the Central Election Commission, Taliya Ibrahimova, the head of the legal protection department of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, Tarana Karimova, the Chair of the "Gender and Economy" Public Union, Yegana Hajiyeva, the Chair of the "Institute of Young Democrats" Public Union, Asmatkhanim Mammadova, the Chair of "Kamillik" Society gave detailed information to the participants about the right to vote, the basics of its provision and implementation, opportunities for women to further increase their activity in elections, and the measures implemented in this direction. The event was attended by the representatives, as well as members of the media.
